Progress and Fun in Kenya

Today marks our team’s fourth day in Kenya. The team landed on New Years Eve just in time to ring in the new year with much celebration in Nairobi. New Years day we drove 9 hours to Kitale to start our stay at our Kenyan partner’s home. We have spent the last two days bringing the sponsor Christmas gifts to the children at Hope Children’s Home and enjoying much fun and games. The Children were overwhelmed by the generosity if their sponsors and each child immediately started exploring and enjoying their gifts. They received everything from a solar powered robot kit to books, clothes, Legos and toys. We were also impressed by the construction of the new greenhouse and the near completion of the new girls dorm. The girls are moved into the new dorm and are just awaiting the finishing of the indoor plumbing in the bathrooms. It has been a joy to see how well cared for and loved all of the children and the property is under the stewardship of our partners and a HUGE thank you to all of our donors who make it all possible.

Christmas Trip to Mt. Elgon

The holidays are for many a time for gathering and celebrating with friends and family. For the children at Hope Children’s Home, about one-half are able celebrate this time with relatives that they visit during Christmas break. Some of the children, however, do not have relatives to visit or are unable to visit them. These children often feel sad that they do not have someone to visit for the holidays. To brighten their spirits, Light Up Hope provided the funds to send these kids, along with our Kenyan partners Fred and Alice, on a “safari” to Mount Elgon National Park, which is west of Kitale on the border between Kenya and Uganda. The kids were able to enjoy an exciting trip in a park full of caves, waterfalls, and natural pools. The park is named for the extinct volcano Mount Elgon, which is the largest volcano base in the world. The mountainside rises up from the surrounding plains and is home to hundreds of species of birds, small antelope, forest monkeys, elephants, and buffalos. The trip was a gift to the kids at Hope Children’s Home so they could have something special to do during their Christmas break. Light Up […]

Education in Kitale and #GivingTuesday

Light up Hope helps to provide an education for the children at Hope Children’s Home, our Kenyan partner. Donations to Light Up Hope are working to develop paths away from dependence and towards self-sufficiency through education. Stephen, who lives at Hope Children’s Home, shares his ambition to be an airplane engineer someday. August 14, 2014 My name is Stephen Yohana. I am fifteen years old and in class eight. My best subjects are English and Mathematics. I always like to ride bicycles during my free time. I came to Hope Children’s Home in 2006. Before I came to Hope Children’s Home I was undergoing some challenges: I had to do a lot of labour so that we would get enough food to eat. Some times I did not even go to school like my agemates. I’m glad because since I came to Hope Children’s Home my life changed. I am happy and comfortable because I don’t have to do hard work to earn a living anymore. I’m also happy because I am now in school and doing well in my education. When I grow up I would like to be an aeroplane engineer. My vision is to excel in my […]

New playground installed

We are so thankful for the amazing generosity of all who attended Light Up Hope’s annual fundraiser, Barn Fire and the generosity of two very special girls and their birthday party fundraiser.  Because of their generosity Hope Children’s Home now has a playground installed for the younger children!  Our Kenyan partner, Alice Afwai shared with us the reaction of the children to having the new playground, “They have been seeing them (playgrounds) on TV, and in papers, now they have one, God is real!” One of the children we were particularly thrilled to see enjoying the playground with a big smile on his face is Jeff.  We first met Jeff in April of 2014.  At the time he was living in a dire situation with his Grandmother in Nairobi.  After Jeff’s mother passed away and his father abandoned him and his sister, Mary Grace, they were left in the care of their elderly grandmother.   When we met with his grandmother she shared with us that she loves Jeff and Mary very much, but the burden she was bearing was too much for her.  Inside a small one room home on the outskirts of Nairobi the grandmother was responsible for […]
