Space for Learning, Space for Leadership, Space for Worship

High school is a demanding time for students in Kenya.  The curriculum is challenging and extra help at school is often hard to come by when a student is struggling in a particular subject.  At the end of every year students in the Light Up Hope High School Sponsorship Program leave their boarding schools to return to their guardians for Christmas break, and this year we found many of the students were struggling in the areas of math and chemistry.  During this 6 week break we are pleased to share with you that we were able to offer 5 weeks of tutoring at the new Light Up Hope Social Hall in Nairobi.

A core value of our mission is to go beyond meeting basic needs and find the individual talents each of our program beneficiaries posses and give them opportunities to shine.  Ellis and Lewis are program beneficiaries in our adult transitional university program and Ellis also grew up in a children’s home alongside many of the students in our high school program.  These two young men are leading the tutoring sessions and are able to not only strengthen the students’s understanding of the high school subjects, but also mentor them and share the benefits of university life and be a shining example that a university education is not only an option to the wealthy upper class in Kenya, but to each of our high school students with hard work, focus and determination in their studies.

The sessions are being held in Nairobi at the new Light Up Hope Social Hall which is a space designed to gather children, young adults, parents and guardians who benefit from Light Up Hope’s programs for seminars, inspirational talks, counseling and mentoring sessions.  And finally, every Sunday it is also a church – Hope Discovery International Church, reaching out to the community and offering creative and musical opportunities in the worship band for the members of our adult transitional program and community youth.

But don’t take our word for it that these sessions are benefiting our students, hear directly from Mildred and Nick, two of our high school students who are attending the tutoring sessions:

One thing about this tuition is that it has made me to be very creative in my thinking; I have known things that I did not have a clue on before. I now have a positive attitude towards learning and improved my self esteem. I have come to know my weaknesses and how to work on them. Thank you so much for the support that we get to have this tuition, it is a great pleasure. May the Almighty God bless you and continue with the same spirit.

I am Nicholas and I am in form 2 going to from 3 in the coming year and am working on making things easy for me next year. Am really happy for the tuition since it is one of the ways I have of making things straight in form 3. I am improving in many things. First, I am getting to understand mathematics which I was very weak in, I have been taught on how to tackle questions in the subject. Also am now getting the concepts in the sciences especially chemistry and biology and I am very thankful for the tuition.
