From Barefoot Dreams to Academic Triumph

Alice Mutua’s story is…

one of a talented girl whose family was full of love and support but only lacked the financial means to prop up her exceptional intelligence and drive. She grew up in a family of seven children with parents who only completed a primary education. This meant financial stability was a constant struggle. The situation was further complicated by her mother’s blindness, which made everyday tasks even more challenging.

When Alice began primary school her talent for languages earned her praise from teachers and peers, who envisioned her as a future news anchor. However, she faced hurdles like being unable to pay school fees, which led to frequent interruptions in her education. Clothing was a problem; while many of her classmates wore shoes, Alice often went barefoot and in patched clothes, which affected her confidence. She lacked access to basic necessities, like sanitary products and food for her breakfast and lunch forcing her to endure school days without meals. While her parents could not provide everything financially she knew she still had her parents unwavering moral support.

Alice’s loving and supportive family

Despite these challenges, Alice persevered and excelled in her studies! Her high score on the National Exam earned her a scholarship to secondary school. This opportunity allowed her to attend a boarding school for girls, fulfilling a long-held dream.

With a Light Up Hope scholarship, Alice excelled academically. She ranked among the top students in her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams. Now in her fourth year at the University of Nairobi, Alice pursues a Bachelor of Arts in Kiswahili and History, with aspirations for postgraduate studies in education and translation.

Light Up Hope’s support has dramatically changed Alice’s life. She now has the resources to thrive academically and is deeply involved in environmental protection and conservation. Her commitment to making a difference is evident through her leadership roles, including Chairperson of the University of Environment Club. Alice is dedicated to making environmental issues accessible to all, ensuring that even those with limited education can understand and participate in solutions.

Alice’s story is a testament to the power of support and resilience. With the support of Light Up Hope she has transformed her challenges into stepping stones, preparing her to become a teacher and an expert in translation and interpretation. Her ultimate goal is to educate others about global challenges, contributing to her community and beyond.
